Munsyari is the trekking capital of the Kumaon Himalayas. 1. Khaliya Top Trek (Day Trek)
The Khaliya Top trek is the most popular trek from Munsyari — and for good reason. It's a moderate day trek that rewards you with 360-degree views of the Panchachuli peaks, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, and the entire Kumaon range.

Trek Details
- Starting Point: Balanti Bangla (4 km from Munsyari, reachable by jeep)
- Trek Distance: 6 km one way
- Elevation Gain: 1,000m (from 2,200m to 3,200m)
- Time: 3-4 hours ascent, 2-3 hours descent
- Difficulty: Easy-Moderate. Well-defined trail through rhododendron forests.
What to Expect
The trail starts at Balanti Bangla and climbs steadily through rhododendron and oak forests. As you gain altitude, the tree line gives way to alpine meadows (bugyals). The final stretch is a grassy ridge that opens to the summit — Khaliya Top, a wide meadow at 3,200m.
From the top, the Panchachuli peaks stand before you in a sweeping arc. On a clear day, you can see Nanda Devi (India's second-highest peak), Nanda Kot, Hardeol, and Rajrambha. The sunrise view from Khaliya Top is considered one of the finest in the Kumaon Himalayas.
Sunrise Trek Option
Start at 3:30 AM to reach Khaliya Top by sunrise (around 5:30 AM in summer, 6:30 AM in winter). The golden light on the Panchachuli peaks is an unforgettable sight. Carry a headlamp.

What Makes It Special
Namik means "place ofNamik" in the local dialect — it's a sacred valley. You'll pass through villages that still practice the ancient Kumaoni way of life, with stone houses, terraced fields, and traditional water mills (gharats). The glacier itself is stunning, set in a cirque of peaks.

Altitude Sickness: What You Need to Know
Several Munsyari treks go above 3,000m, where altitude sickness is a real risk. Here's what to watch for:
Symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)
- Headache (the most common symptom)
- Nausea and loss of appetite
- Dizziness and fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
Prevention
- Ascend gradually — don't gain more than 500m per day above 3,000m
- Stay hydrated — drink 3-4 litres of water per day
- Avoid alcohol and smoking
- Consider taking Diamox (consult your doctor first)
- Listen to your body — if symptoms worsen, descend immediately
Emergency Evacuation
The nearest medical facility to Munsyari is the Primary Health Centre in town. For serious cases, evacuation to Almora or Haldwani is necessary. Carry travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
Best Season for Trekking
- May-June: Best for all treks. Snow has melted, trails are clear, meadows are green.
- September-October: Excellent. Post-monsoon clarity, cool weather, stunning views.
- March-April: Good for Khaliya Top. Higher treks may still have snow.
- July-August: Avoid. Trails are slippery and leech-infested.
- November-April: Avoid higher treks. Heavy snow above 3,000m.
